The prosthetics workshop in Gaza
The prosthetics workshop in Gaza (the Artificial Limb and Polio Centre, ALPC) was established in 1974 and is the only centre in Gaza that makes, fits and repairs prostheses and orthoses. It also provides physiotherapy, wheelchairs and other assistive devices.
What they do
A prosthesis is not a one-off delivery. It has to be fitted, adjusted and replaced — especially for children, who outgrow theirs in under a year. That requires a workshop, tools, materials and skilled staff who are there over time.
ALPC covers the whole chain: assessment, in-house manufacturing, fitting, rehabilitation and follow-up. Services are free for patients.
The situation now
The war has multiplied the need while damaging the workshop itself. The premises are damaged and operations run out of temporary facilities. Importing materials and components is severely restricted. They stay open regardless, and provide what help they can with the means they have.
Despite the appalling violence, the prosthetics workshop has managed to keep partial operations going in temporary premises, providing what help it can with the means available.
How the money reaches Gaza
